VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — All 17 of Vestavia Hills High School’s National Merit Semifinalists are now Finalists.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced last week that all 17 students had moved on to earn the Finalist distinction. It is the highest number of National Merit Finalists at any school in Alabama.
The National Merit Finalists at Vestavia Hills High School are: Greta Chen, Lana Chen, Allan Feng, Emma Henderson, Edward Huang, Connor Johnston, Pum Koo, Manning Owen, Hannah Precise, Anastasia Sorochinsky, Caroline Stair, Graham Thompson, Charles Trotman, Samantha Warner, Sherry Wu, Keene Zhang, and Angela Zheng.
To become a Finalist, Semifinalists must submit a detailed application to provide information about their academic performance, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Finalists must have outstanding academic records throughout high school, be endorsed by high school officials, write essays, and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test.
Approximately 15,000 students nationwide will be named National Merit Finalists this year, representing less than 1 percent of the 1.6 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT test as entry into the National Merit program.
As Finalists, the Vestavia Hills students are now eligible for multiple National Merit scholarships worth thousands of dollars. Some 190 colleges and universities around the nation also extend scholarship offers to National Merit Finalists, according to the National Merit organization.
“We are proud of these students for all they have achieved as Rebels and as outstanding young men and women of character. We look forward to watching them achieve even more as our alumni in the years to come,” Vestavia Hills High School principal Tyler Burgess said Wednesday.
