Vestavia Hills City Schools superintendent announces retirement

Sheila Phillips to step down Sept. 1

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (VHCS) — Vestavia Hills City Schools Superintendent Sheila Phillips, Ed.D., will retire next month.

Phillips announced her decision this morning during a regular meeting of the Vestavia Hills Board of Education. Her last day will be September 1.

Board of Education president Nancy Corona said the board would begin the process of naming an interim superintendent immediately and would work to hire a new superintendent by the end of the calendar year.

After the meeting, Phillips released the following statement:

Thank you for the opportunity given to me to serve this school system and community for the past six years and most notably as superintendent. It has been a privilege that I have not taken for granted for one minute. To serve alongside our administrators, faculty and staff in this capacity has truly been one of the highlights of my career, and I consider the current and past board members with whom I have had the honor of serving to be the dearest of friends.

Phillips became the district’s sixth superintendent in 2014. During her tenure, the school system developed a new strategic plan and implemented numerous initiatives aligned with the plan’s strategies and mission statement. The district created and expanded many learning opportunities for students, developed new hiring and evaluation processes, and launched a district-wide facilities plan that included the purchase of the W.A. Berry High School campus. Phillips was named to Birmingham Magazine’s list of “15 People Making It Happen in 2015” and was a 2016 recipient of the “Superintendents to Watch” award from the National School Public Relations Association.

MEDIA ADVISORY: At Dr. Phillips’ request, there will be no further statements/interviews/sound from the school system today. We will provide information as to media availability, if any, at a later time.
