It is not an unknown secret that Alabama loves college football. Tailgate parties, cookouts, memorabilia, opinionated Facebook posts and rivalries march their way through September as we enter into football season. This past week we had our monthly luncheon at Vestavia Hills Country Club but with a bit of a twist. In honor of our speaker, Rogers Redding- National Officiating Coordinator, NCAA football and the football season beginning our members were encouraged to wear their favorite football team colors and bring canned goods in support of The Jimmie Hale Mission.
Men showed up wearing crimson red monogrammed polos and stripped orange and blue ties. Women were poised in red dresses, and even a few jerseys. Spirit and enthusiasm ran through the large banquet room with both pride, unity and opposition. We had large tins for members to donate cans to their favorite teams, called “Alabama, Auburn and All Others.” It was a huge success with over 250 cans donated!
Our Luncheon speaker, Rogers Redding became the National Coordinator of Football Officials for the NCAA in 2011. As the National Coordinator for Football Officials he stands as the national spokesman for officiating issues, organizing national meetings and developing training programs. He has also served as the Secretary/Rules Editor for the NCAA Football Rules Committee since 2008. His years of experience and plethora of stories left the audience anxious for the weekend to begin and the games to start.
Whether you go for the food or a die hard fan, happy football season to all!
