Lighter and Brighter

October 16, 2013

Women know a thing or two about wanting to look good. Whether it’s a fresh new hair cut or a replenishing facial, there’s just something about going to a salon and being pampered. It could be soothing smells of lavender and eucalyptus that dance around the room, engulfing all your day to day stress and automatically making you relax. Or perhaps, the colors of hair dye that are delightfully arranged in an artistic manner. Better yet, your hair dresser who could practically have their master’s degree in counseling or communication. No matter what the experience is of being inside the salon, nothing beats walking out to your car feeling lighter and brighter. Not only does Aveda help make this happen for their clients, but unlike most salons they teach Cosmetology and Esthiology to help prepare their students to make their client feel and look their best.Image

Aveda Institute was just named for 2013 Best of Birmingham: Hair/Salon. You quickly begin to understand why when you see that they not only offer services within a budget, but services full of fervor and efficiency. Walking into Aveda of Birmingham is an experience. You are met by hundreds of Aveda products, including: professional plant based hair care, skin care, make up Pure Fume and Lifestyle products. The skin care has an emphasis on using pure flower and plant essences in their treatments to help purify and balance the skin.  Even their environmental efforts are noteworthy. Their building, a once movie theater at Riverchase Galleria in Hoover has turned into a re-purposed and recycled Salon that makes it one of the most sustainable buildings in Alabama.  It is these small, yet precise details that really makes Aveda stand out.

ImageNot only do they teach and sell Aveda products, but they act as a full functioning salon and spa. Aveda is not just locally founded, but rather has nearly 5,700 professional hair salons and spas in 24 countries worldwide and in 58 Aveda Institutes nationwide.  The students, while being supervised by licensed educators, are getting real life experience of working in a real salon with real people doing real hair. It’s a win-win for the trainee and the guest. The student is getting firsthand experience, while the client gets to pay less than a comparing salon.  “We want our students to be the best in this industry and it is our job to set them up for success before they leave our hands,” Kristen Walters, Guest Recruiter at Aveda Institute explains. It is the ultimate goal to teach their students a craft that connects beauty, wellness, and fashion with respect to the environment.

Being as holistic as Aveda is, it only makes sense that they are also known for their community involvement. “Becoming a part of the Aveda network isn’t just about styling hair and doing make up. As a student you can experience different ways to become involved in many causes,” notes Walters. Community events that aren’t just for the tedious, but rather merriment occasions full of fashion, fun and awareness. Tomorrow evening, October 17 they are having a 1980’s Pink Party in support of Breast Cancer. They are having a fashion, hair and makeup runway show and live speakers who will be sharing their stories. If you donate, you get a custom glamour makeover and a photo shoot to remember the evening!

When you see the inclusive approach that Aveda Institute has to learning, teaching and creating for students and clients, you can’t help but think they’ve thought of it all. Aveda’s mission statement is as clear and accurate to their teachings as it gets, “Our mission at Aveda, is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty but around the world.” It is through this approach, that they have been rightfully won 2013 Best of Birmingham: Hair/Salon. Congratulations!
